Brief background of the institution
Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi
Vidyapeeth, Ratnagiri, Dapoli,
Maharashtra came into existence on 18th
May 1972 with a mission to preserve,
extend and disseminate knowledge
especially in the field of Agriculture and
to cater the needs of farming community
of the Konkan region. Of late it has
emerged as a leading institution in the
field of agricultural research. The
emphasis on research is on mainly rice
and horticultural crops.
Presently 125 projects / schemes funded
by various agencies are in operation. This
University has won numerous coveted
awards viz. ‘Dr. J.S. Patel award’,
‘Krishi Bhushan award’, ‘Indira
Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra award’ and
‘ICAR Best Institution award’ to name a
few. It has also been recently awarded an
ISO 9001-2000 certification.
First agricultural University to receive
such a ISO certification in the country.
University is having 40 years of
experience of arranging various seminars,
symposium, training programs,
exhibitions, etc.
Importance of the Program
Jackfruit is one of the important but
neglected fruit crop in Konkan region.
Both tender and ripe fruits as well as seed
of Jackfruit are rich source of
carbohydrates, vitamin A and C. Jackfruit
possess enormous processing potential
and the value added product fetches
premium prices in the market. However, it
is not commercially cultivated like mango
and cashew. Isolated attempts are made
for value addition in this precious crop.
There is great need to organize a
consultative meeting of the scientists,
producers, extension workers and
entrepreneurs associated with jackfruit to
take a stock of the issue and develop
strategic plan for promotion of Jackfruit
at national level.

Specific outcomes of the proposal
The deliberation of the consensus meeting
in the form of recommendations will be
widely circulated among the farmers,
stakeholders, entrepreneurs and
Government authorities. This will also
help in framing future policies by the
government. Novel techniques discussed
in this consensus meeting will be
compiled and passed on to farmers and
other beneficiaries.
