Background
Jackfruit is believed to be native of India,
originated in Western Ghats of Southern India. It is
widely cultivated in Malaysia, Myanmar, The
Philippines, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Brazil, West
Indies, Pakistan and other tropical countries in the
world. Jackfruit is the largest edible fruit in the world
and is a tropical evergreen tree. Botanically, the
Jackfruit is known as Artocarpus hetereophyllus.
Lam.
Ripe Jackfruit is very nutritious, rich in pectin
and minerals like phosphorous, iron, potassium and
calcium. Ripe bulbs are full of carbohydrates,
protein, ascorbic acid and carotene and used in the
preparation of canned products, nectar, jam, jelly,
fruit bar, candy, etc. Unripe bulbs are used in the
preparation of chips and papad. The raw fruit is a
popular vegetable in India's west coast and used in
several culinary preparations. Due to its abundant
availability during monsoon season in the coastal
regions and also non-availability of vegetables
during that season has earned the name as 'Poor
Man's Food'. Jackfruit foliage is a nutritive fodder
for animals and the wood is excellent timber value.
Its timber is in great demand in many Asian countries
due to its resistance to fungi and termites.
Jackfruit is the key for local food security in
terms of food, fodder, timber besides an assured
income source. Jackfruit may be called
Kalpavriksha (divine wish-fulfilling tree). All parts
of the tree are very useful and the yield fetches higher
returns than annual field crops. The only first tree
being grown in extreme rainfall situation of high
rainfall areas like NE region, Andaman & Nicobar
islands to Western South India receiving very low
rainfall. Besides trees can be grown in marginal
lands.
About Bangalore
Popularly known as the garden city, Bangalore is
located in Southern India. It is one of the most beautiful
and popular vacation destinations in the country. The
city has diverse attraction to offer with lush gardens, tree
lined avenues, well laid out parks notably the sprawling
Cubbon Park and colourful Lalbagh, ancient edifices
and the magnificent Vidhana Soudha, which houses the
state legislature of Karnataka. Also known as the Silicon
city of India, Bangalore is the software capital of the
country.
A sneak visit to the world famous places like
Brindavan gardens, Chamundi hills and Palace at
Mysore 148 km) Ranganathittu birds sanctuary (140
km), Shravavabelagola, the famous Jain pilgrimage
place with stone sculpture of Bahubali (142 km), Belur
and Halebidu, the world famous temple towns (233 km)
and Nandi Hills (65 km) and a whole lot of other places
of interest makes your visit memorable.
Lack of organized marketing and the absence of a
reliable supply chain is a major constraint faced by
farmers from reeping a fair price for jackfruit.
Immediate attention needs to be given to strengthen
market linkages, value addition and empower
farmers through collective action to realize better
returns.
In the context of huge production potential of
jackfruit and to prevent loss of nutritious food
material worth nearly 2,000 crores annually, it is
important to develop suitable technologies for
processing of Jackfruit. In this direction, the
University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, has
developed protocols and technologies for processing
products and quality control. The protocols and
technologies have potential for wider applicability
and have commercialization.
The technologies generated have been
disseminated through Hands-on-Training to quite a
large number of entrepreneurs, farmers and women-
self-help groups in Karnataka. The technology
transfer to North-Eastern parts of the country has been
done with the financial assistance of the Dept. of
Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi.
Evidently, due to the wide research gap and poor
linkages between the growers, researchers and
entrepreneurs, it is pertinent to bring together all the
stakeholders to share the expertise and technological
needs to promote the Jackfruit cultivation and value
addition. With this as background, the University of
Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, is proposing to
organize an International Symposium on Jackfruit
and Bread fruit in the Tropics: Genetic Diversity,
Marketing, Value Addition and Marketing
